Van Munching Hall - North Wing
$21 Million Expansion to Van Munching Hall Adds 38,000 SF to Smith
School Home
Since 2002 when the Smith School opened its $38 million, 103,300 square foot
South Wing expansion, Van Munching Hall has had one of the most technologically
advanced facilities directed at management education in the world. The
bar was set even higher with the recently opened North Wing addition in spring
2008.
The $21 million North Wing addition of 38,000 square feet to Van Munching
Hall increased the the total space to approximately 238,000 square feet. The
North Wing has two large 80-person classrooms and two 55-person flexible
classrooms. Five conference rooms and a dozen team rooms will facilitate the
team work that is such an important part of both the undergraduate and MBA
curriculum. A large, elegant executive meeting room that can be partitioned in
several ways will be used by students, alumni and recruiters for meetings and
events. The Dr. and
Mrs. William A. Longbrake PhD Suite occupies the third floor. The accounting
and information assurance department and the decision and information
technologies department have also faculty offices in the new space.
Outside of Van Munching Hall, the new south campus gateway features gorgeous
stonework, a new clock tower, and a beautifully landscaped green space with
brick walkways.
In 1992 Leo Van Munching, Jr. ′50, a Smith school alumnus and president
of the company holding the exclusive franchise to import and distribute
Heineken and Amstel Light beer, donated $5 million toward the construction
Van Munching Hall. The move from Tydings Hall to the state-of-the-art Van
Munching Hall took place in 1993. In 1999, Van Munching donated $6 million
in additional funding to help finance the expansion and renovation of the
building. The building boasts a next-generation technology
infrastructure including complete wireless network coverage, four student
computer labs, and five netcentric teaching and research labs.
The North Wing was financed with a combination of state
and private funds. The building is specially designed to meet the
requirements of Smith's undergraduate and graduate programs, delivering the
academic, professional, and social experiences necessary to help prepare
students to lead 21st century organizations.
