Rudy’s to turn into a pub at 5 p.m.

Life at Van Munching Hall is about to get a whole lot more exciting. Dining Services has announced that Rudy’s Café will turn into a pub after 5 p.m., Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Read more about this and other exciting Smith news:

1. Kermit and Piggy to wed in ceremony at UMD’s Memorial Chapel

Rumors have been circulating that Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy have split for good, but these rumors were industry-generated to create buzz for ABC’s The Muppets. In reality, Kermit and Piggy plan to hold a private wedding ceremony in UMD’s Memorial Chapel this weekend. Fozzie Bear will stand as Kermit’s best man, and the Swedish Chef will officiate over what promises to be a confusing-yet-multicultural ceremony. Miss Piggy reportedly has no bridesmaids, as she prefers to keep all of the attention focused solely on herself. Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem will provide entertainment during the reception, which takes place at the Riggs Alumni Center. Read the full story at go.umd.edu/muppetshow.

2. Dean Triantis to take summer sabbatical as a Canadian Mountie

Smith’s favorite Canadian-born dean just announced that he will take leave of his duties for the entire summer to serve on the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The decision seems to be a long-time coming, as various Smith administrators report that he’s been wearing the uniform hat to meetings for months now without explanation. Triantis confirms he’ll be working for Canadian Homeland Security as a Mountie, which generally involves asking visitors “aboot” the weather, and checking luggage for signs of any smuggled maple syrup and/or beaver pelts. Not a bad way to spend the summer, eh? Read more about his decision here go.umd.edu/mountie.

3. Chris ‘n’ Joe’s Bows to launch in spring 2016

Smith’s resident style gurus are launching a bow-tie company that is sure to be a giant success. Professor Joe Bailey and Smith staffer Chris Mays are known school-wide for their love of fancy neckwear, so no one was surprised when they joined forces to create Chris ‘n’ Joe’s Bows. They hope to give Route One Apparel a run for its money and launch their Spring line with custom fabric patterns including collection darling “Mays Flowers.” Read more about their new company here go.umd.edu/bowties.

4. Rudy’s to become O’Lamone’s at 5 p.m.

Rudy’s Café – named after former dean Rudy Lamone – will convert into an Irish pub named “O’Lamone’s” just in time for happy hour, Dining Services announced on April 1, 2016. They received many complaints that there weren’t any good places near Van Munching Hall to watch a Terps game, grab a beer after work or hang out after class. With the infrastructure already in place, Rudy’s was the obvious solution. Doors open at O’Lamone’s today at 5 p.m. Bring your IDs and enjoy a nice, cold Heineken! For the most up-to-date draft menu and full menu of pub appetizers, visit go.umd.edu/heineken.

5. Victor Mullins named head coach of U.S. Olympic Basketball Team

It’s no secret that Victor Mullins, associate dean of the undergraduate program, is a known baller. He’s seen playing intense pick-up games with other deans, namely Joyce Russell, and the Smith Court Classic tournament began during his tenure. Now, Victor is taking his love of the game to the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team. He will be the head coach during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, finally pushing that guy from Duke, who shall remain nameless, out of the coaching position that he has held for far too long.
