Smith School Announces Teaching Awards, Endowed Chairs

Friday, May 10, 2013, was a day for celebration. The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business named two endowed chairs and more than 35 faculty members at the school were presented with teaching awards.

The new endowed professorships went to Rajshree Agarwal, who was named the Rudolph P. Lamone Chair for Entrepreneurship, and Vojislav Maksimovic, who was named the William A. Longbrake Chair in Finance.

The festivities all occurred at Smith’s end-of-the-semester assembly, where six staff members also received awards of excellence.

The awards given at the assembly highlight the dedication Smith faculty have to teaching their students. The first set of awards given was the Top 15% Teaching awards. There are three categories for the Top 15% Teaching awards:

  • Category 1 awards go to the Top 15% of full-time faculty (primarily tenure-track and Tyser Teaching Fellows). 
  • Category 2 awards go to the Top 15% of lecturers, adjunct faculty and Ph.D. students. 
  • Category 3 awards will be made to the top 15% of faculty teaching in the MBA core and/or other courses with more than 65 students.
