Specialty Masters Students Celebrate the Start of the Year of the Monkey

The Smith Master Student Association (SMSA) hosted a Chinese New Year celebration in Van Munching Hall on Friday, February 5, 2016. More than 140 specialty masters students, staff, and faculty at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business attended to enjoy the authentic Chinese food and celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Monkey.

The Tai Yim Kung Fu Lion Dancing Team served as entertainment—they shared the traditional lion dance story, and then performed for the attendees. The dancers were supported by music, with a drum, cymbals and gong. After the show, students had the opportunity to try on the lion costume and dance themselves.

At the end of the celebration, the students held a lottery and 36 students won various prizes including Smith School notebooks, folders, cups and cell phone chargers. With everyone shouting out “Happy New Year!” together in Van Munching Hall at the end of the night, the event was a success.
