Top Risk Professional Joins UMD Smith School of Business Supply Chain Management Center

College Park, Md. – April 12, 2012 – Gary Lynch, a top professional in the field of supply chain risk, has joined the Supply Chain Management Centerat the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business as a senior research fellow. He will work with the center on research projects and work with Smith students in the classroom.

Lynch is the Global Practice Leader for Supply Chain Risk and Resiliency Solutions at Marsh Risk Consulting. Marsh Risk Consulting is a division of Marsh, a global leader in insurance broking and risk management.

“We are extremely honored to have Gary Lynch join the center as a senior research fellow,” said Sandor Boyson, research professor and co-director of the Smith School’s Supply Chain Management Center. “His expertise and visionary leadership in global supply chain risk management is world-renowned. He works with top corporate leaders throughout the world to understand risk and help them safeguard their most important business systems.”

Lynch will work closely with faculty at the Supply Chain Management Center, which has a mission to help industry and government integrate leading edge business practices and technology to real-time supply chains, and then translate that research to the undergraduate and graduate students at the Smith School. He has already worked with the center on a risk project for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and he has lectured to M.S. and MBA students in supply chain risk management courses. He has also hired Smith MBA students to work at Marsh Risk Consulting.

Lynch is a member of the Global Executive Committee at Marsh, responsible for global practice integration, innovation and research, brand recognition, and business development. He leads innovation and thought leadership for the Marsh Risk Consulting specialties practices. His achievements led to executable solutions such as new supply chain risk transfer insurance products; new products and services to identify, measure, and mitigate supply chain risk; comprehensive solutions for managing the economic, social, health and jurisdictional risk of a pandemic; and solutions to measure and monitor third party risk.

In his role as a management consultant, his experience includes advising executives at top global organizations in a range of industries, including aeronautics, pharmaceuticals, contract manufacturing, high-tech, retail, and energy.

Lynch previously worked in top risk and management consulting positions at Booz Allen Hamilton, Ernst and Young, Gartner Group, and Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase). He is also an entrepreneur, having founded two risk strategy ventures – Xeno LLC and Technology Risk Advisors Inc. 
Lynch has served as an advisor to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Network and as a panelist and speaker for many top industry events around the world. He has guest lectured at top institutions, including the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, MIT, and the Stern School of Business at New York University. He is also the author of several books on the subject of supply chain risk, including “Single Point of Failure, The Ten Essential Laws of Supply Chain Risk Management.”

He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professor and earned his bachelor of science from New York Institute of Technology.
