Having a global perspective is critical to leading in today’s business world. At the Smith School, students take part in international experiences abroad and at home to shape their view of the world and give them the practical preparation needed to excel and lead.
On Wednesday, May 16, 2012 doctoral students, faculty and guests celebrated the achievements of the 2011-2012 academic year. It was a night to recognize students at the Robert H. Smith School of Business for academic milestones and extra achievements, as well as honoring doctoral students with awards.
Fede Garcia-Lopez (Smith MBA 2003; Engineering 1998) came up with the idea for Panas Gourmet Empanadas during an entrepreneurship class while in the part-time MBA program at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business. It started as a wholesale business and in 2010 he opened restaurants in Dupont Circle and Bethesda.
In boardrooms, many members are standalone actors. They “listen, make their points and go home,” said Carly Fiorina, MBA ’80. “But the reality is the rest of the world sees the company board as a team with responsibilities.”
Professor Lemma W. Senbet has advice for his students: “I tell them to always do your best, wherever you are and whatever you are doing – you never know who could be watching.

The Journal of Accounting and Public Policy (JAPP), edited by two professors at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, launched a new conference series that will rotate among the London School of Economics (LSE), IE Business School and the Smith School. The first conference was held on May 25, 2012, at the London School of Economics, London, UK.
