It has become a beloved tradition in just two short years for the MBA program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business: the Charity Auction.
Both students and professors contribute to the auction items – the most prized being dinners at the homes of Smith professors, which have traditionally seen good-natured but fierce bidding among students. This year, Dean Alex Triantis will be participating for the first time.
Hosted by the MBA Association, the 2015 Charity Auction takes place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 2 in Frank Auditorium in Van Munching Hall. The evening will bring together MBAs, faculty and staff to celebrate the Smith community while benefiting a deserving charity.
Originally started in 2013, the Charity Auction raises money for Special Olympics Maryland – Prince George’s County. MBA bidders raised $8,000 the first year, and a Smith delegation presented the check at the 2013 Fuqua MBA Games. In 2014, organizers set the fundraising goal even higher, raising more than $13,000 and winning the Fuqua games prize for the largest charitable gift.
The Charity Auction includes both a silent and live auction. The silent auction began at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1 and ends at 11:59 p.m., taking place online at ter.ps/smithauction. The auction continues at the live event on Thursday, during which many of the signature auction items featured, including evenings hosted by:
- Charles Olsen, professor of practice and director of the Business Honors Program
- Michael Faulkender, associate professor and director of the Masters Program in Finance
- David Godes, associate professor of marketing
- Shreevardhan Lele, assistant dean of academic affairs, MBA Programs and clinical professor
- Neta Moye, clinical professor of management
- Paulo Prochno, clinical professor
- Alex Triantis, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business
