University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business to Award 13 Study Abroad Scholarships for 2012

The Office of Global Programs (OGP) at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is pleased to award 13 study abroad scholarships to business school students for 2012 programs.

Scholarships are awarded based on responses to an essay contest. A panel of Smith School judges selected the first eight winners on Sept. 30, 2011. In the words of one judge all the awardees “… focused on why {you} wanted to participate in a particular program/visit a particular country rather than just go abroad in general.”

Fifty-six (56) undergraduates vied for the scholarships by answering the following questions:

“What do you expect to learn from this study abroad experience? When you are in an interview with a potential employer and you are asked by him/her why you chose this opportunity to study abroad, what will you say?”

Five of the scholarships are made available through the generosity of the Center for Business, Education and Research (CIBER). Three additional scholarships are funded by the Embassy of Thailand specifically for those students registered for the Thailand course.

The winners for the short-term January 2012 programs are:

  • Pratik Dixit -- Nicaragua: Microfinance and Social Value Creation
  • Dathan Scott -- Doing Business in Brazil
  • Elaine Wong -- Doing Business in Singapore and Malaysia

The winners for the short-term January 2012 Thailand: Social Value Creation and Entrepreneurship program are:

  • Anastasia Adams
  • Prannoy Nambiar
  • Greg Ricciardi

The winners for the spring semester-long 2012 programs are:

  • Ryan Holleran -- Copenhagen Business School, Denmark
  • Elizabeth Moran, Sophia-Antipolis, France (SKEMA)

“The Office of Global Programs (OGP) continues to offer business students opportunities to expand their learning outside the classroom,” says Lisa Barnard, OGP director. “We are grateful to the professors and staff who lead these global experiences. Another merit-based competition for five additional scholarships for March, May, August, and September programs will begin soon.”
