NEW SPEAKER ADDED TO EVENT
Business and economics principles are useful to inform discussions in public policy and the social realm. “Lessons from Negotiations: Working towards Deals that Last in the Middle East” featuring Dalia Ziada, Bassem Eid, and Dr. Einat Wilf is not a debate; it is a symposium and a conversation with the audience that emphasizes a respectful, action-oriented, future-looking dialogue. Leveraging research about effective negotiations in business, we will explore applications to the historical success or failure of negotiations in the Middle East.
The Fact-Based Discourse Initiative aims to elevate and support having diverse speakers with expertise and experience, so we can equip the next generation of business leaders with tools to navigate challenging conversations in a complex world.
We encourage everyone to attend and ask difficult questions. If interested, please submit questions ahead of time using this form. We will aim to cover as many questions as possible, whether submitted ahead of time or raised during the event.

STATEMENT REGARDING LESSONS FROM NEGOTIATIONS: WORKING TOWARDS DEALS THAT LAST IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Academia is about curiosity, learning and respect for all. Leveraging research about effective negotiations in business, this event will explore applications to the historical success or failure of negotiations in the Middle East, and facilitate a successful, action-oriented, forward-looking dialogue.
Dispute resolution is core to negotiations, and is being taught in the business school on many levels. The principle of engaging with and challenging one’s own assumptions, using the scientific mindset and engaging in respectful future-looking dialogue, is also core to the Smith Business Leadership Fellows program. This panel discussion will model these principles for students.
Both speakers have deep expertise and experience that is relevant to a conversation around this issue.
Dr. Einat Wilf has a BA from Harvard, an MBA from INSEAD and a PhD from Cambridge. She has worked in McKinsey & Company as a consultant and has also been involved in negotiations in the Middle East. She recently spoke at Harvard about the conflict (see here Middle East Dialogues: Einat Wilf in conversation with Tarek Masoud).
Dalia Ziada is a peace activist and is fighting for women’s rights. She has been nominated by CNN as one of eight agents of change in the Middle East.
In this panel, we are not elevating the extremes. The discourse will center around understanding the challenges of negotiating in a very complex situation, and discuss ways to create a sustainable future of coexistence. Anyone who attends is welcome and encouraged to respectfully share their viewpoints and thoughts during the Q&A parts of the events. We want all viewpoints to be heard. Our UMD students are knowledgeable, well-read and brilliantly articulate. We anticipate that they will bring challenging questions that open opportunities for an empathetic but fact-based discussion that leaves everyone who attends with food for thought.
