It is one of the biggest events on the social calendar for graduate students and alumni of the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, and it’s not to be missed: the 12th Annual Monte Carlo Night Gala will bring together MBA, MS, and PhD students; alumni; faculty and staff for an evening of dancing and casino gaming.
This year, Monte Carlo Night takes place on Saturday, Feb. 22 and will be hosted at the Ritz Carlton in Washington, D.C. The party starts at 8 p.m. and goes on until midnight. While the early-bird, $75 tickets are sold out, there are still tickets available for $85.
Originally started in 2002, the event benefits the M. Scott Lamana and Eric Cranford Memorial MBA Fellowship Fund – remembering the part-time Smith MBA students who perished in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon. In the spirit of “Terps Helping Terps,” proceeds from ticket sales go to support a merit-based scholarship fund.
“Monte Carlo is not only a night to honor members of the Smith family and contribute to the scholarship that was named in their memory, but it’s a night to celebrate together as classmates and as a community” student organizer Susan Johnson (MBA ’14) said. “This year, we’ve introduced charter bus services from Baltimore so that many more students can participate from across the Smith graduate programs.”
Hosted by the Smith Full-Time, Part-Time MBA and Masters Student Associations, Monte Carlo Night has become an important part of the Smith experience. Chengyu (Dean) Shen (MS ’13), former President of the Smith Master’s Student Association (SMSA) said “I can’t find the words to describe it. Monte Carlo may be the most magnificent night during your time at Smith.”
Alumni from across the graduate programs and their guests are also invited to the big event, providing an opportunity to reconnect with the school and their classmates. Marcus De Paula (MBA ’13) said “I’m incredibly excited to come back to Monte Carlo Night this year to reconnect with the faculty and staff that helped me along my journey, and to meet the next class of Smith graduates.”
