The 27th Annual Doctoral Program Awards Banquet, held on May 10, 2007, was an opportunity for faculty, administrators and doctoral students to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business. And what a year it was! Arjang Assad, professor of management science and senior associate dean, noted the continued upward trajectory of the Smith Schools doctoral program, as the school produces both excellent research and excellent researchers who go on to placements at some of the worlds best business schools. This year the placement list includes McGill University, University of California at Davis, National University of Singapore, and National Taiwan University.

As the Smith School has become more well known for the quality of its research program, more people have wanted to pursue PhDs here. Alex Triantis, professor of finance and chair of the finance department, reported that the department received 200 applications for just three open doctoral candidate positions this year.
