After 30 years in the accounting field, Anoop Mehta ’84 is stepping up to lead the profession into the future.
Mehta, a Maryland CPA and former chair of the Maryland Association of CPAs’ Board of Directors, was named chair of the American Institute of CPAs, the world’s largest member organization in the field, during its May 17, 2022 meeting in Austin, Texas.
Mehta marks the second Maryland CPA to serve in the role and will also take on responsibilities as chair of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants.
“I’m so incredibly humbled by this honor, and I’m eternally grateful to the countless leaders who have mentored me throughout the years and helped put me on this path,” said Mehta in a press release. “Maryland has a long history of forward-thinking leadership in this profession, and I’m proud to carry that tradition forward.”
Mehta previously served as vice-chair of the AICPA and devoted his time to other volunteer positions including his membership of the AICPA Board of Directors, the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants Board of Directors, the AICPA Business and Industry Executive Committee, and the AICPA Political Action Committee and AICPA Council. He was also a board member and president of the Maryland Space Business Roundtable.
As chair, Mehta said he intends to promote helping other accountants grow professionally and personally, diversifying the pipeline of new accountants and preserving trust in the profession, all of which were critical to the trajectory of his career.
“The CPA is a foundation to open doors, broaden horizons and build career journeys,” Mehta said. “It was true when I passed the exam in 1991, and it’s just as true now, if not more. Serving this profession has been my life, and helping others join this profession will be my life’s work.”
Mehta is currently chief strategist of Analytical Mechanical Associates, an aerospace firm that assists government and commercial organizations by delivering solutions for complex engineering, math and business problems.
Prior to joining Analytical Mechanical Associates, Mehta spent more than four decades at Science Systems and Applications Inc., where he eventually served as president.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. Mehta and his wife, Bina, live in Clarksville, Md., and have two daughters and two grandchildren.
