Russ Wermers, professor of finance at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, will provide expertise, as an affiliate, to one of the largest economic consulting firms in North America.
Wermers, also director of Smith’s Center for Financial Policy, will support Analysis Group, which provides economic, financial, health care, and strategy consulting services to leading law firms, Fortune 500 companies, and government agencies,
In its announcement including other personnel developments, the Boston-based firm touts Wermers for developing “state-of-the-art approaches to measuring and attributing the performance of portfolio managers.”
Wermers holds a UMD campuswide teaching award, plus a 2012-2013 Krowe Teaching Award from the Smith School. He studies and teaches quantitative equity strategies and is researching microfinance institutions in Thailand.
His recent work includes a working paper coauthored with Smith finance professor Alberto Rossi showing widespread evidence that FOIA requests are linked with substantial trading gains.
Wermers' earlier research has developed new approaches to measuring and attributing the performance of mutual funds, pension funds, and hedge funds, as well as devising strategies for investing in these funds.
He also has served as an expert witness in numerous matters, including litigations challenging mutual fund fees, the selection of investments for ERISA retirement plans, and investment suitability.
