College Park, Md. - May 12, 2006 - The University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced that Carly Fiorina, former chairman and chief executive of Hewlett-Packard and Smith School MBA 80, will deliver the keynote speech at the May 22, graduation ceremony. The event will be held at 4 p.m. at the Comcast Center on the universitys College Park campus.
Fiorina will address approximately 1,000 Smith School undergraduate, master and doctoral graduates about the role of leaders in business including the impact of globalization and technology, what defines leadership and why businesses must play an active role in the communities of the world.
"I am very pleased to welcome Carly back to the Smith School to address our 2006 graduates," said Howard Frank, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. "She offers a truly inspiring example of leadership for our graduates. She has been extraordinary and visionary as a champion of the tremendous impact of technology on business and embodies the core values of the Smith School as a leader for the digital economy."
In June 4, 2005, in a ceremony that occurs only once every five years, the Maryland Alumni Association bestowed its highest honor on Fiorina by inducting her into the University of Maryland's Hall of Fame.
As head of HP, Fiorina led the reinvention of the company many associate with the birth of Silicon Valley, returning the global tech company to its roots of innovation. She spearheaded the company's controversial merger with Compaq Computer Corp, now called one of the most successful high-tech mergers in history. Prior to joining HP, Fiorina spent nearly 20 years at AT&T and Lucent Technologies, where she held a number of senior leadership positions and directed Lucent's initial public offering and subsequent spin-off from AT&T. Fiorina also sat on the New York Stock Exchange's executive board, and she has previously served on the boards of Cisco Systems, Kellogg Co. and Merck & Co. She currently serves on the boards of CyberTrust, Revolution Healthcare Group, MIT Corp. Board of Trustees and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing
