Q&A:
Tell us about your teaching innovation.
I teach a class titled 'Navigating Organizational Networks'. As part of the final project for this class the students helped organize a very successful networking event for all the Masters students. The event was attended by 14 panelists from Consulting, Sports, Entrepreneurship and Finance fields. The event was also attended by about 150 students that benefitted from one-on-one interactions with the leaders in the industry. It helped students apply all the tools they had learnt during the semester to not only expand their network but also help other students do the same.
What inspired you to create it?
Networking is a practical skill and can only be learnt by applying. I wanted to create an opportunity for the students that allows them the perfect environment to learn to network. Additionally, I wanted the students to take ownership of their network. This project allowed them to do both.
Why is it important?
The organization of the event had to be done in a very short time (4 weeks) due to the nature of the course. As a result, students had to make very quick decisions, show leadership and learn at the same time. This created a lasting learning experience for the students that will ensure that they will carry this skill for life.
How did it impact the student experience?
It left a lasting impact on the students and helped them understand the value and power of Smith Brand. As evidenced in this video one of my students in the classroom created and shared on LinkedIn as a validation of the positive experience.
