Financial Times Ranks Smith School Among World’s Top Business Schools

College Park, Md. – January 26, 2009 – The MBA program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is ranked No. 20 in the United States in the Financial Times MBA 2009 rankings, published today. The influential rankings place Smith No. 12 in the world for research, the third consecutive year in the top 15.

The Smith School has been recognized for the strength of its faculty research, recently ranking an impressive No. 3 in the United States by BusinessWeek on a measure of “intellectual capital” for the number of faculty articles published in top academic journals.

The Smith School’s MBA program also comes in at No. 6 program among public business schools in the United States in the Financial Times rankings.

The Financial Times rankings are compiled from two questionnaires – one for the business schools and the other for the MBA class of 2006. The value for the money criterion is calculated using the salary earned by alumni three years after graduation and course costs. The research rating is calculated by number of faculty publications in 40 international academic and practitioner journals. Points are accrued by the business school at which the author is presently employed and adjustment is made for faculty size.
