Louis Dubick '19 Pioneers His Path

Louis Dubick '19 Pioneers His Path

Victor Mullins, associate dean of the undergraduate program at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, recently interviewed Smith Sophomore Louis Dubick ’19 to discuss how he is “pioneering his path” during his Smith Journey. Louis is in the process of earning a Bachelor of Science in Finance. He is also a Scholarship Athlete on the University of Maryland Varsity Men’s Lacrosse Team.

So what does the Smith journey entail? During their freshman year, Smith students begin to build their personal brand through the SmithStart program. Sophomores dedicate their second year to pioneering their path to success by focusing on an overall academic and career strategy. Junior year focuses on students taking command of their careers during to ensure that they are well positioned for their professional journey. Finally, as a senior with an arsenal of tools, knowledge, and networks, Smith students are able to embrace their experience and celebrate their success.

Dean Mullins: Reflect on how you "built your brand" during your freshman year.

Louis: During my freshman year I built my brand by expanding my network. I put in the time and effort to meet new students, professors and alumni. Many of these new faces I still keep in touch with today and have allowed me the opportunity to continue to grow my network.

Dean Mullins: How about your sophomore year? How are you "pioneering your path?" I do recognize that you are just beginning.

Louis: In my sophomore year I am tailoring my class schedule to provide me with both soft and hard skills. I need both to land and succeed in an internship this summer.

Dean Mullins: What advice would you give to the freshmen and sophomores?

Louis: My biggest advice would be: do not be afraid to reach out to people in your network to discuss what they do, the path they took to get where they are today, or just to socialize and make a good impression. Many people want to help young kids succeed because most of them have been where we are today. My second piece of advice would be to try to experience as many industries and jobs as possible. You might become passionate or interested in something that you might not have experienced had you not decided to try something you previously had no background in.

Dean Mullins: How are you making a mark on campus?

Louis: I am making my mark on campus by being a student-athlete here at the University of Maryland and staying involved with the ongoing activities throughout the Smith School.

Dean Mullins: What is your dream?

Louis: My dream is to work on Wall Street for two years out of college and then move back to Maryland and work for a Venture Capital firm.

Dean Mullins: Why are you passionate about the Smith School?

Louis: I am passionate about Smith because of the unbelievable guidance and direction the staff provides for us students. Through the Smith’s professors and staff, students are given unlimited opportunities to fulfill their goals and be successful after college.
