N5 Sensors, a leading Maryland-based company specializing in environmental hazard detection, worked with a team of six graduate students from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business this past spring to tackle the challenge of expanding its wildfire and air quality monitoring solutions into European markets. This opportunity was provided by Smith’s Center for Global Business through the Maryland Global Consulting Program, an opportunity for students to apply the skills they have developed in the classroom to real-world consulting projects.
With the increasing severity of wildfires and the need for accurate and early detection, N5 Sensors aims to bring its innovative N5SHIELD™ sensor systems to communities and businesses globally. The consulting team, advised by John Bono, associate clinical professor of Information Systems, laid the groundwork for international expansion, identified key partners, and provided an actionable roadmap for N5 Sensors to navigate the new market, which N5 plans to use moving forward.
The project offered a unique learning experience for the consulting team, providing them with an understanding of a niche industry and valuable insights into global markets. One student who participated noted, “I also learned a great deal about international business and global markets. I had the opportunity to research different countries and cultures, and to learn about the challenges and opportunities that companies face when expanding into new markets. This knowledge will be invaluable to me in my future career.”
Maryland-based companies interested in the Maryland Global Consulting Program will have a chance to take part in a new Global Expansion Accelerator in spring 2024. The Global Expansion Accelerator will build on and incorporate the Maryland Global Consulting Program and give companies the ability to access resources and knowledge from the export ecosystem here in Maryland and increase their company’s knowledge about how to expand globally. More information about the Global Expansion Accelerator can be found on the Center for Global Business website.
The Maryland Global Consulting Program is provided in part by CIBE, a Title VI grant administered by the U.S. Department of Education.
