College Park, Md. – August 26, 2009 — University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced Ken G. Smith, Dean’s Chaired Professor of Business Strategy, was elected as a fellow of the Strategic Management Society. He is among only 44 fellows in the history of the society and the first Smith School faculty member to receive the honor.
The Strategic Management Society Fellows Group recognizes and honors members of the academic society who have made significant contributions to the theory and practice of strategic management. The group provides opportunities for collaboration and a forum for discussion among top academics in this area named as fellows. The fellows meet annually at the Strategic Management Society’s annual meeting, usually held in October.
“Ken is well deserving of this great honor, as one of the top researchers in his field,” said G. “Anand” Anandalingam, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. “His accomplishments add to the achievements of our faculty — renowned for their excellence in scholarship and teaching — and their impact on business management practice and strategy as they translate their thought leadership to students, corporate executives and policy makers.”
Smith is one of the world’s leading scholars in the areas of competition, competitive advantage and strategic decision-making. His research been published in leading scholarly journals, such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Management Science, Organization Science, and the Strategic Management Journal. He has also co-authored two books: “The Dynamics of Competitive Strategy” (Sage Publishing, 1992); and “Strategy as Action: Competitive Dynamics and Competitive Advantage” (Oxford Publishing, 2005).
Smith’s research has won a number of Best Paper awards from leading academic journals. He is a three-time winner of Krowe Award for outstanding teaching from the Smith School of Business and was granted the University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar Teacher Award in 1996. A former entrepreneur, he was editor of the Academy of Management Review from 1996-1999, elected a fellow of the Academy of Management in 1998, and from 2006-2007 served as president of the Academy of Management.
The Strategic Management Society had more than 2,500 members from more than 50 countries. Members include academics, business practitioners and consultants and the society focuses on the development and dissemination of insights on the strategic management process, as well as global discourse on the topic.
