The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is No. 9 in U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of the best online MBA programs for 2018. Smith’s online MBA program also was ninth in the same ranking in 2017.
Among subcategories, Smith ranks fourth in student engagement. In addition to this area, peer reputation, faculty credentials and training, student services and technology, and admissions selectivity feed the criteria for the ranking.
Assistant Dean of Online Programs Judy Frels says Smith’s strong showing in student engagement reflects why this category factors strongly in successful student outcomes. "Student engagement is both essential and challenging in an online format. Our weekly live online classes, where all students see each other and their faculty, give students and faculty a real sense of being part of a community,” she says. “When students arrive on campus for our capstone closing residency, we really do know them from the time we've spent online with them over the course of the program."
The top 10 schools, overall, are:
- Temple University (Fox)
- Carnegie Mellon University (Tepper)
- Indiana University (Kelley)
- University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (Kenan-Flagler)
- Arizona State University (Carey)
- University of Florida (Hough)
- University of Texas - Dallas
- University of Southern California (Marshall)
- University of Maryland (Smith)
- Pennsylvania State University - World Campus
In a message to the Smith community, Dean Alex Triantis thanked the school’s online MBA faculty and staff “for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the program.” He also recognized Smith’s OMBA students and alumni, as “enthusiastic brand ambassadors for the program.”
