In November, Smith celebrated alumni achievements, student-faculty connections, and future growth. Highlights include Richard Dickson’s Homecoming talk, student capstones in experiential learning, Giving Tuesday on Dec. 3, and Ed-Lamar Petion's and Jeanelle Johnson's inspiring career journeys.

Alumnus Richard Dickson ’90 returned to the Smith School during Homecoming Week to talk about his journey from Terp to leading toymaker Mattel and to his current role as the CEO of Gap, Inc. READ MORE

Giving Tuesday on December 3

Save the date for this year’s Giving Tuesday on December 3! Designate a gift to support programs or initiatives that are meaningful to you, such as experiential learning opportunities, student scholarships or creating cutting edge classroom spaces in Van Munching Hall. Smith Advisory Council Day

Students engaged with council members at the annual Smith Advisory Council Day to discuss programs and share experiential learning projects. Each year, alumni, employers and industry leaders who sit on 10 program-specific councils gather in Van Munching Hall to evaluate the Smith School’s programs and curriculum, hear from current students and network. READ MORE

Over the spring 2024 semester, six teams comprised of students from Cohort 2.0 of the Flex MBA and Graduate Certificate in Technology Management programs banded together to utilize the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout the program toward a capstone experience that saw them solve real-world challenges for public and private sector enterprises. READ MORE

Ed-Lamar Petion

Smith Alumnus Ed-Lamar Petion ’24 earned double degrees at the Robert H. Smith School of Business in supply chain management and marketing, and now he’s taking advantage of both. He recently joined Microsoft’s SCORE (Supply Chain Operations Rotation Experience) program, and he has a side digital art business. READ MORE

Jeanelle Johnson

Jeanelle Johnson, MBA ’04, pursued an MBA to help hone her leadership skills and support her aspirations of ascending through the ranks of the corporate landscape. She chose the Robert H. Smith School of Business's part-time MBA program because of its reputation and quality programming that fit within her schedule. The result not only impacted her career trajectory but also allowed her to form relationships with classmates who have become lifelong friends. READ MORE

Join fellow Terps at Deloitte for a deep dive into the rapidly evolving world of AI through the eyes of two University of Maryland professors. REGISTER

November 13: Maryland Veteran Small Business Week Celebration, 5 p.m. This November is our chance to mark not just America's 70th nationwide Veterans Day, but also the 2nd annual U.S. Veterans Small Business Week. Please join us in College Park at the Capital One Tech Incubator for our own Maryland Veteran Small Business Week Celebration. REGISTER

November 19: Social Media Business Models & the Promotion of Extremism and Zero-Sum Mindsets, 6 - 7:30 p.m. 

Join Balaji Padmanabhan, Dean's Professor of Decisions, Operations & Information Technologies Director, Center for Artificial Intelligence in Business at the Smith School and a panel of experts as they explore how social media business models fuel extremism and zero-sum mindsets. This event is part of the Fact-Based Discourse Initiative and the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets. REGISTER

November 21: Smith Social Baltimore 

It's a Smith Social! Join the Smith community for happy hour at Nepenthe Brewing Co. in Baltimore. Prospective and current students, and alumni from all of our graduate programs are invited. December 3: Smith Business Leadership Fellows Cohort 3 Presentations, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. 

Join us as our Cohort 3 Fellows present their Poster Presentations for BMGT162: The Future of You, Business and Society! Fellows will present and be judged on their poster presentation solutions—part of the consulting projects they have been working on during the fall 2024 Semester. The event will be held in the STAMP Student Union. REGISTER

December 5: Smith Social Washington, D.C. 

It's a Smith Social! Join the Smith community for happy hour at Vagabond Bar and Kitchen in Washington, D.C. Prospective, current students, and alumni from all of our graduate programs are invited. December 7: UMD Alumni Association Holiday Party, 7-10 p.m. 

Join the UMD Alumni Association at the Mayflower Hotel for our 5th Annual Alumni Holiday Party. Celebrate the holiday season with fellow alums while enjoying great food, beer, wine and music. Pre-registration required, tickets will not be sold at the door. Registration will close at Noon on Friday, December 6. REGISTER
