The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business hosted its first Enterprise Risk Management Program from Oct. 31 through Nov. 4, 2016, in collaboration with the American Bankers Association.
Topics covered included credit risk, asset liability, management risk and strategic risk. “I learned a lot,” said Sheryl Brannon, senior director of association. “I’m not in the direct banking environment, per se, so it was important for me to understand all aspects of what goes into a process. It was an opportunity that allowed us to become more well-versed and knowledgeable.”
The Smith School, the American Bankers Association and several large community banks put nine months of planning into the event. “It was a collaborative effort,” Brannon said.
Smith School professor of the practice and executive-in-residence Clifford Rossi was the keynote speaker. Prior to entering academia, Rossi had nearly 25 years of experience in banking and government, having held senior executive roles in risk management at several of the largest financial services companies.
Geared toward mid-senior level risk practitioners in the banking industry, the program provided additional training related to participants’ fields of interest, updating their skills and knowledge. “Those are the most critical parts of risk management,” Rossi said.
Another session is planned for May 22-26, 2017.
