Smith School Honors Doctoral Students at 31st Annual Banquet

The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business celebrated the outstanding achievements of students, faculty and alumni at the 31st Annual Doctoral Award Banquet, held May 18, 2011. Special guests included Smith School Dean Anand, Charles Caramello, associate provost for academic affairs and dean of the University of Maryland’s graduate school, and Cindi Hale, assistant dean of the graduate school, to share in the night’s celebration of achievements.

Many achievements of students got recognized (e.g., completed working papers, advanced to candidacy, defended dissertation proposal, defended final dissertation, published in “A” journal, received “R&R” in “A” journal, and more). Students were asked to stand to receive applause for each of their accomplishments, which were shown repeatedly all night-long, too, on the plasma screens around the room.

Debra Shapiro, director of the Smith School doctoral program, noted that the trend of students’ achievements is growing in number across the Smith School— reflected, for example, by more than doubling of the number of dissertation proposals defended in 2010-2011 compared to four years ago.
