The Robert H. Smith School of Business undergraduate information technology (IT) program was listed among the U.S. Top 10 in a special report released by the business technology news network TechRepublic on Nov. 3, 2008. The school was cited as among the nation’s best for students seeking leadership and managerial roles in the IT field, as well as for recruiters seeking the best talent.
According to Jason Hiner, editor-in-chief of TechRepublic, in the introduction to the report, “A degree from one of these 10 programs will provide a great foundation for a successful IT career.”
The Smith School is highlighted for its effectiveness in preparing IS students to be effective leaders. In describing the strengths of Smith’s program, the report quotes Hank Lucas, chair of the decision, operations and information technologies department, along with a current student.
“We know that the key thing we need to do is help students learn how to solve problems. Some of the facts they learn today will change as the industry evolves, but if they can look at new technology and know how to apply it, they’ll be positioned well for career success,” Lucas said.
When selecting its list of Top 10 undergraduate IS/IT programs, TechRepublic assessed which would offer the most value. An education committee evaluated the following criteria: curriculum, cost vs. value, student/faculty ratio, percentage of faculty with PhDs, job placement, co-ops and/or internships, number of computer labs and the overall strength of the program.
