Smith School’s Dean Anand on WAMU 88.5 FM’s Kojo Nnamdi Show

deanRobert H. Smith School of Business Dean G. “Anand” Anandalingam joined Seth Goldman, CEO and founder of Honest Tea, as guests on the Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU 88.5 FM, Wednesday, Oct. 21. The conversation focused on business ethics and the bottom line and the questions many have raised regarding the business world’s moral compass in the wake of last year’s collapse.

Dean Anand talked about how the Smith School and its recently launched Center for Social Value Creation are preparing students to think not only about shareholders, but all stakeholders. The goal is to inspire students to be leaders that understand how to apply business principles to make money and effect transformative social changes. He stressed that the current generation of students is very interested in how they can have a positive impact on society and the environment, and many are interested in joining organizations that align with these values, or starting their own ventures. Dean Anand connected these values with the example of Honest Tea, which produces healthy, organic and fair-trade beverages with a focus on sustainability. Fellow guest Goldman talked about his Bethesda-based company’s start, growth, challenges and opportunities as a company committed operating in an socially conscious manner while still making money.

Host Nnamdi and the guests fielded questions from callers and e-mails throughout the nearly hour-long segment.
