Supply Chain Masters Students Place Third in Global Competition

Smith graduate students (L-R) Fiaz Ahmad ’25, Emmanuel Eshemokhai Etsu ’24, Jayanthvardan Eswaramurthy ’24, and Ahmad Mohi Ud Din ’25 placed third globally and second in the Americas in the Global Sustainability Supply Chain Student Competition. Their Project MapleGuard addressed inventory waste in fresh produce, and they will present their solution in Geneva in March.

A team of graduate students studying supply chain management at the Robert H. Smith School of Business took third place in the Global Sustainability Supply Chain Student Competition and second place in the Americas region.

The results were announced on Dec. 20, 2024, from a field of over 84 teams from 18 countries. Teams presented solutions to tackle global supply chain challenges. The competition is a UN Endorsed Global Competition for university and college students to develop cutting-edge sustainable supply chains that focus on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Representing the Green Guardian team from Smith is Emmanuel Eshemokhai Etsu, MS ’24, Jayanthvardan Eswaramurthy, MS ’24, Ahmad Mohi Ud Din, MS ’25, and Fiaz Ahmad, MS ’25. The team presented Project MapleGuard, a comprehensive solution aimed at tackling excess and obsolete inventory in the fresh produce industry. The team is supported and advised by Dean’s Professor of Supply Chain Management Martin Dresner.

“Participating in this competition was transformative,” Etsu said. “It challenged us to think critically, collaborate effectively and innovate under pressure.”

As a result of their achievement, the team has been invited to attend the FIATA HQ Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland in March.

“This recognition is just the beginning of our commitment to making a difference in the world of global supply chains,” Etsu said.
