COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Associate Professor of Finance Michael Faulkender has been named Associate Dean for Masters Programs at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.
Faulkender, who joined the Smith faculty in 2008 and has directed the Master of Finance program since 2012, will oversee all Smith master’s programs. This includes the full- and part-time MBA and online MBA programs, the specialty masters or Master of Science programs, graduate certificate programs, and the executive MBA programs at College Park and in China.
Smith School Dean Alex Triantis says Faulkender “has been very involved with our master’s programs, teaching in most of these programs, chairing the MS Oversight Committee, and working closely with the [UMD] Graduate School and the Provost’s office on several different initiatives.”
Full-time MBA students last spring formally recognized Faulkender as a top professor and he received a 2015-2016 Krowe Award for Teaching Excellence. “Mike is also highly visible in both academic and business communities for his research in the area of corporate finance,” Triantis says. “I am confident that Mike will do an outstanding job in this new role, and having all of our master’s programs under one umbrella will be helpful for both strategic and operational reasons.”
In overseeing the EMBA and online MBA programs, Faulkender succeeds Gary Cohen, who will return to full-time faculty duty in Smith’s Department of Logistics, Business and Public Policy. Cohen has directed those programs since 2012 via Smith’s Office of Executive Programs.
“Gary has done an outstanding job leading OEP in every dimension,” Triantis says. “He has overseen the launch and successful growth of our [online MBA] program; he has restructured our team and activities in Beijing which in turn have had significant positive effects on our China EMBA program; he has ensured that our College Park EMBA program retains its high quality and reputation while growing its revenue; and he has spearheaded significant revenue growth in our non-degree executive education business and has established stronger connections with our business community.”
A search is under way for a successor to guide the OEP’s non-degree executive development programs.
