College Park, MD July 18, 2007 The University of Marylands Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced that Anand Anandalingam, Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Management Sciences, has been appointed as the schools senior associate dean. In this role, he will be responsible for working closely with faculty and staff to support Smiths overall program, research and curriculum development. The three-year appointment is effective July 1, 2007. Arjang Assad, outgoing senior associate dean, has been named the Deans Professor for Extraordinary Service. This newly created professorship recognizes Assad's outstanding service and contributions to the advancement of the school in successive major administrative roles over the past 14 years.
Anands demonstrated leadership and proven vision make him an ideal candidate for the position of senior associate dean, said Howard Frank, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. He has played an instrumental role in shaping Smiths world-class executive education program as well as leading a recent redesign of our top-ranked MBA program. I look forward to his contributions in this new position.
For the last three years, Anandalingam has served as chair of the Smith Schools Decision and Information Technologies Department, as well as the chair of the Masters Design, Development and Innovation Committee. He is the founder of the Center for Electronic Markets and Enterprises, a center that he co-directed from 2001-2004, and he helped found the Center on Health Information and Decision Systems.
Before joining Smith in 2001, Anandalingam was at the University of Pennsylvania for nearly 15 years where he was the National Center Professor of Resource and Technology Management, and a professor of operations and information management at the Wharton School. His positions at the University of Pennsylvania included serving as the chair of the Department of Systems Engineering and directing the Executive Master's Program in Technology Management. He has received numerous academic and teaching awards while at the Smith School, as well as a variety of scholarships, fellowships, prizes and endowed appointments at Pennsylvania, Harvard and Cambridge. He has been on Editorial boards of top-tier journals and has also graduated more than twenty PhD students, many of who have joined top-30 academic institutions.
Anandalingam began his academic career as an assistant professor at the University of Virginia. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. from Harvard University, and his B.A. and M.A. from Cambridge University.
