Congratulations to the University of Maryland CHIDS-led team that was one of the winners of the second annual American Public Health Association’s Codeathon! The competition took place on November 13-14 during the association’s annual conference in New Orleans. The codeathon challenged participants to create apps, tools, and other technological innovations that connect place and health, tying into the Annual Meeting theme of “Healthography: How Where You Live Affects Your Health and Well-Being.”

The University of Maryland team consisted of MSIS students Keyur Shah, Ishwarya Sethurman, and Tejal Kanase, and MBA student Chun Wong from the Smith School and Deok Gun Park from Computer Science Ph.D. program and Luis Santos from the Engineering Ph.D. program. The team was mentored by Kenyon Crowley of CHIDS (and iSchool PhD program).

The team’s winning solution leveraged wearable data viz tools to manipulate and analyze sensor and mhealth app data from Validic in combination with Esri geospatial mapping tools to provide an innovative population health analytics tool.
