Supporting Smith Students By Paying it Forward

Albert P. Carey

Albert P. Carey ’74, a long-time executive at PepsiCo, knew he wanted to give back when he committed $1 million to the Maryland Promise program. He currently supports 13 Smith School Maryland Promise scholars through the Albert P. and Victoria V. Carey Maryland Promise Scholarship.

The scholarships are matched dollar-for-dollar by the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation and the University of Maryland. Carey himself came to the university on an athletic scholarship. He knew that many students have the grit and drive needed to succeed at Maryland, but lack the financial means to attend. “I feel grateful; therefore, I want to pay it back,” says Carey.

As part of the Maryland Promise Scholarship Program, need-based scholarships are provided to high-performing undergraduate freshmen and transfer students from the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia. “They come with a dream. I hope the university unlocks the opportunity for them to achieve their dream, but really I hope they exceed their dream,” says Carey. “And then when they’re successful, I hope they come back and do something similar.
