Cupid’s Cup to Expand Beyond Its Maryland Base
Following 11 years at the University of Maryland, the Cupid’s Cup entrepreneurship competition will expand its reach to other U.S. campuses starting in March 2017. The first host outside Maryland will be Northwestern University in Chicago, starting a rotation that will give aspiring entrepreneurs around the country greater opportunities to compete for more than $100,000 in cash prizes each year.

A coffee startup that emerged through the University of Maryland (UMD) has captured the 2016 Cupid’s Cup Competition. Javazen, which blends coffee with teas and superfoods for “a healthier caffeine boost,” topped five other entries in the 11th annual competition, established by Under Armour Founder and CEO Kevin Plank -- in collaboration with his alma mater and founding "university partner," UMD.

On Thursday, April 7, Cupid’s Cup Entrepreneurship Competition will return to The Clarice for its eleventh year of show-stopping startup exhibition. Six companies have been announced as finalists, selected from hundreds of applications representing nearly 100 universities and colleges. On Feb. 19, Under Armour Founder and CEO Kevin Plank ’96, who chairs the competition, hosted the semi-final round at Under Armour’s global headquarters in Baltimore, Md.

Scholly, a startup app out of Drexel University that make it easy for students to find college scholarships, won the $75,000 top prize at the 10th annual Cupid’s Cup, chaired by Under Armour founder and CEO Kevin Plank ’96 and hosted by the Smith School’s Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship. A crowd of nearly 1,000 packed the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center for the competition on April 22, 2015.
