U-Md. Robert H. Smith School of Business Receives $1M from Henry & Elaine Kaufman Foundation to Support Fellowship in Business History

College Park, Md. – May 4, 2010 – The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced it will receive a $1 million endowment from the Henry & Elaine Kaufman Foundation to support a fellowship in business history, in affiliation with the school’s Center for Financial Policy. University of Maryland history professor David Sicilia was appointed the first Henry Kaufman Fellow in Business History, effective July 1.

University of Maryland Business School Increases Capital Campaign Goal to $100M

College Park, Md. – March 26, 2010 – After surpassing its original $90 million fundraising goal two years early, the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business has announced it will increase the seven-year target to $100 million in the campaign to support student scholarships, faculty recruitment and retention, facilities and innovation. The campaign goal is part of the university’s Great Expectations, the Campaign for Maryland drive to raise $1 billion, which began in July 2004. So far, the Smith School has raised more than $91 million.

U-Md. Robert H. Smith School of Business Receives $1.5M from BB&T to Support Leadership, Ethics Education

College Park, Md. – March 11, 2010 – The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced it will receive $1.5 million from the BB&T Foundation to support to business ethics and leadership programs. Awarded over a 10-year period, the gift will fund new curriculum and the BB&T Colloquium on Capitalism, Ethics and Leadership lecture series at the Smith School’s new Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change, which will launch in the fall of 2010.

Smith Alumna Lacey Brauer Catches ‘Lucky Break’ on Wheel of Fortune

Lacey Brauer, a 2009 alumna from the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University Maryland, caught her “lucky break” and won big on ABC’sWheel of Fortune. Brauer, 22, attended the Smith School for a Marketing degree, with a concentration in Sports Management as a part of the Sports Management Fellows Program. She appeared on the popular TV game show on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009.

Ernst & Young Foundation Donates $250,000 to University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business

College Park, Md. – June 22, 2009 — The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced a $250,000 gift to create the Ernst & Young Freshman Fellows Orientation Program and endowment. The gift will support orientation programs and presentations for Smith’s two-year Freshman Fellows program, an innovative combination of cohort-style classes, experiential learning, co-curricular activities and events that create a cohesive learning community linking students, faculty, staff, corporate partners and alumni.

President Bush Recognizes Robert H. Smith For Philanthropy Supporting Humanities

College Park, Md. – November 18, 2008 – President George W. Bush awarded Robert H. Smith, a key benefactor and namesake of the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, with the prestigious National Humanities Medal for 2008 for his philanthropic contributions to the humanities. Smith received his award during a ceremony yesterday at the White House East Room.

Smith Speaker Series Welcomes Coach Gary Williams

The inaugural session of the Smith Speaker Series was launched with much fanfare on October 14, 2008. The speaker, Gary Williams ’68, is the head coach of the University of Maryland’s men’s basketball team. Smith School Dean G. “Anand” Anandalingam opened the session and welcomed Coach Williams, applauding him for his achievements and contributions to the University of Maryland.

Smith Alum in the Running for BusinessWeek’s Best Young Entrepreneur 2008

Robert H. Smith School of Business finance alumnus Anik Singal ’05, was named one of America’s most promising young entrepreneurs in BusinessWeek.com’s fourth annual roundup. Singal is a finalist for the top of the 25-and-under crop — online voting will narrow down the 25 finalists to determine the top five businesses that readers feel hold the most promise.

Smith Community Celebrates Alumni Mentors

Over 60 Smith School MBA students, administrators and alumni mentors attended the fourth annual Smith MBA Alumni Mentor Program (AMP) Awards Luncheon on April 19, 2008. Held at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Washington, D.C., the luncheon recognizes exemplary program participation, honoring the “Mentor of the Year,” “Cluster of the Year,” and “Cluster Coordinator of the Year.” AMP chairs Glenn Gargan ’87, MBA ’02, and Jean-Yves Van Halle, MS ’96, MBA ’04, addressed attendees and reflected on the program’s growth over the past few years of their involvement.
