The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is happy to welcome 12 new full-time faculty members to start the fall semester of 2014. New faculty joined the following areas: Accounting and Information Assurance Sebahattin Demirkan, Visiting Assistant Professor Samuel Handwerger, Lecturer (formerly adjunct faculty) Decisions, Operations and Information Technology

For the second year in a row, accounting students from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business took home first place in the student case study competition at National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) National Convention & Expo, held in Washington, D.C., June 18-20, 2014. 

Dr. Progyan Basu has been selected for the 2014 Undergraduate Studies Faculty Fellows at the University of Maryland. During the 2014-15 academic year, the Undergraduate Faculty Fellows will participate in a faculty learning community that will consider the challenges and opportunities in teaching large enrollment courses and seek to understand and define these courses as uniquely important for student success.

Don’t blame bailouts for excessive risk taking, one researcher said May 29, 2014, during a daylong accounting conference at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. Research presented at the third annual Journal of Accounting and Public Policy Conference in College Park, Md., shows how the expectation of a safety net — which comes with strings attached — actually reins in shareholders and managers with limited liability.

Research by Michael Kimbrough Each quarter brings a flurry of news releases coming from publicly traded companies announcing their earnings, often with an explanation for the good or bad numbers. The companies have a lot riding on the highly scrutinized earnings reports: Stock price changes can be significant as the market reassesses the future prospects of a firm. 

The University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business celebrated students in the Accounting Teaching Scholars (ATS) program at an annual reception and dinner on April 17, 2014. ATS is part of the Smith School’s Undergraduate Fellows Program.  

The Robert H. Smith School of Business has expanded its reputation as a research and knowledge hub with top-25 showings in three recent worldwide rankings.

On March 28, 2014, at the North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Bethesda, Md., students, faculty and business professionals met for the third annual Smith School Business Summit.  This year’s theme looked at innovation as an essential building block for the prosperity and survival of corporations. With more than 600 registered attendants, it was the largest Summit yet.

Smith School of Business Professor Lawrence A. Gordon recently co-developed a formula to determine how much a company should invest in cybersecurity. Now, he targets University of Maryland honors students with this innovation. His course, Accounting and Economic Aspects of Cybersecurity, introduces financial management principles to a discipline grounded in computer science and engineering.
