The first Smith School Recognition and Achievement Award for Service to the Community was awarded to entrepreneur and philanthropist Suzanne Hillman at the Accounting & Information Assurance Department's Dinner honoring the Class of 2024. Suzanne received the award based on an extraordinary career that has left an enduring mark on the region through her leadership, philanthropy, and commitment to community. A lifelong Washington, DC area resident and American University graduate, Suzanne co-founded Southern Management Companies, which now owns and operates approximately 25,000 apartment units and several hotels across Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Rising to CEO, she guided the company with a strong, team-focused approach and a deep commitment to revitalizing overlooked properties. Suzanne’s dedication to education led to the creation of scholarship and leadership programs that have empowered hundreds of students across local institutions. Her support for the arts and active role in economic development further highlight her broad and lasting impact. Her career is a testament to the potential that being a CPA can unlock.

In recognition of her legacy, the Suzanne D. Hillman Recognition and Achievement Award for Service to the Community has been established to honor others who follow in her inspiring footsteps.
