Through those published works, Kannan earned several prestigious awards, such as the INFORMS Society for Marketing Science Practice Prize Award in 2007 and the John Little Best Paper Award in 2008. He was also selected as a finalist for the Paul Green Award three times (2008, 2014, 2020) and has won the AMA/MSI Paul Root Award twice (2014, 2016). At the Smith School, Kannan is an Allan J. Krowe Award for Teaching Excellence recipient, a four-time Distinguished Teaching Award winner (2000, 2008, 2012 and 2016) and received the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award from UMD in 2018.

In 2022, Kannan was identified among the top 2% most-cited scholars and scientists worldwide in a study published by Elsevier and listed in the 2023 “best scientists” ranking by Research.com.
