The Smith School's Erich Studer-Ellis, Tyser Teaching Fellow of Management Science and Statistics, received a TIAA-CREF Top Terp Award at the Terps' Boston College basketball game in December 2005. Studer-Ellis was nominated by one of his students for the award, which recognizes someone in education for their outstanding performance. The award included tickets to the game and an on-court presentation of the game ball signed by Coach Gary Williams.
"I appreciate the honor very much and I always look forward to working with students," said Studer-Ellis. "This is just icing on the cake."
The business student who nominated Studer-Ellis for the award said, "I've never seen a professor so dedicated to the material being taught (especially a subject as dry as statistics). He makes himself readily available for help inside and outside the classroom. I hated statistics in high school but this is now the class I enjoy going to the most. Higher education needs more teaching role models like Erich Studer-Ellis."
"It's great that TIAA-CREF and Maryland Athletics can recognize the outstanding dedication and passion that he [Erich Studer-Ellis] brings to the classroom," said Chris Keane, Terrapin Sports Marketing. "A lot of business students must've been in attendance at the MD vs. Boston College game, because a Top Terp recipient has never received a standing ovation from so many students during the on-court presentation!"
