At Smith’s first “Investing in Excellence” luncheon, donors and students celebrated the life-changing impact of scholarships, which empower students, reduce financial stress, and build futures—an investment in promise, possibility, and the shared pursuit of excellence.

The University of Maryland’s new Financial Wellness Center empowers students with financial literacy through peer mentoring, classes, and events. Led by the Smith School, it centralizes resources on budgeting, investing, and financial planning, preparing students for real-world financial decisions with confidence.

The Smith School kicked off fall 2024 by welcoming its largest freshman class in decades, with nearly 600 new undergraduates—a 20% increase over last year—alongside over 700 new graduate students and 14 new faculty members.

The globally renowned Smith School excels in business research and offers a top-tier educational experience within a supportive community. Annually, it honors outstanding faculty and staff with prestigious awards.

Senior undergraduates Siri Rao, Alexis Reyes and Gregory Rosario represent the Robert H. Smith School of Business as 2023-2024 Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars. The trio are among 20 University of Maryland students who were recognized with their faculty and K-12 -teacher mentors in a ceremony on Nov. 3. 2023. 

Joseph Bailey has been named Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs in the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. He has been acting in this capacity since December 2022.

A new year brings a fresh start, a full slate of 365 days to work on improving oneself in one way or another. Ten Smith professors are sharing their New Year’s resolutions: Tejwansh (Tej) Singh Anand, Clinical Professor of Practice and the Academic Director for the MS in Information Systems Programs “Find innovative ways to propel myself and my students Fearlessly Forward.”

In May, National Student Clearinghouse reported that 662,000 fewer students enrolled in undergraduate programs in spring 2022 than a year earlier, a decline of 4.7%. But first-time, first-year enrollment increased by 4.2% in the same period. Why the overall decline yet increase in first-year enrollment?

Seniors Alexia Ayuk, Nick Bailey and Bradley Polkowitz represent the Robert H. Smith School of Business among 19 University of Maryland graduating seniors recently recognized as Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars for their accomplishments, prestigious internships and GPAs. The recognition includes the scholars’ faculty and K-12-teacher mentors.

Joseph Bailey recalls plotting an electrical engineering career path while growing up in northern New Jersey. Subsequent study at Carnegie Mellon led him to explore that field in a public policy context at Stanford. Then at MIT, he added telecommunications to the mix and co-authored the seminal 1995 book “Internet Economics.”
