The High Five: September 2023

It’s a busy start to the fall semester here at the University of Maryland, as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of becoming the Robert H. Smith School of Business. A record number of graduate students started at Smith this fall, and in all programs, our students are incredibly impressive. Our faculty are also quite impressive. Smith Launches Advisory Boards in China and India

The Smith School is calling on corporate partners and its impressive international alumni to strengthen its strategy, recruiting and placement efforts in China and India. The school just launched two new advisory boards in those markets, composed of business leaders who have volunteered to help the school, current students and graduates.

MSIS Industry Seminar Course Hosts Former Office of the Secretary of the Army CIO

On Oct. 13, the MSIS Industry Seminar course hosted Raj G. Iyer, former Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Information Technology Reform in the Office of the Secretary of the Army, who spoke to over 130 graduate students in the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) program.

Smith Secures $150K for AI Initiative for Capital Market Research

GRF CPAs & Advisors has awarded $150,000 to the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business to seed an AI Initiative for Capital Market Research.

Top Organizations Tap MBA Students for Consulting

This past summer, students in Smith’s Flex MBA program worked on consulting projects with top organizations, including Google, Major League Baseball, Allegiant Air, and the Maryland Department of Veteran Affairs. They traveled to New York, Las Vegas, and in and around Washington, D.C., to present findings to clients, who were “quite impressed,” said Roy Thomason, who organized the projects as a lecturer in Smith’s management and organization department.

New Faculty Strengthen Smith’s ‘Grand Challenges’ Strategy

Balaji Padmanabhan is among the earliest professors to bring machine learning into an MBA program. Sining Song’s research explores environmental-to-fintech-related factors in supply chain sustainability. And Agustin Hurtado recently analyzed 87 million minority-borrower accounts in a study showing minority bank ownership reduces information frictions and improves credit allocations.These professors are among the nine new tenure-track faculty members and three full time professional track faculty joining the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business this fall.

Smith School Now Offers January Start Date for MS in Information Systems Program

The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is adding a January 2024 cohort start date for its Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS). The update comes as the school designates focus areas including artificial intelligence, cloud computing and emerging technologies in this STEM-designated, in-person program.
