The University of Maryland recently recognized Robert H. Smith School of Business graduating seniors as among 18 UMD top undergraduates selected as Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars.
The program, named for the university supporter and Washington-area publisher, highlights the importance of mentorship and provides stipends to the teachers and faculty.
In a ceremony on Nov. 1, 2024, three Smith student honorees were recognized with their mentors and shared recollections about these K-12 teachers and Smith professors:
- Abigail Manga, Information Systems and Marketing
K-12 Teacher Mentor: Turner McManus, Oxon Hill High School, Oxon Hill, Md.
Faculty Mentor: David Ashley, marketing adjunct professor and executive-in-residence - Adelina Seck, Information Systems and Operations Management and Business Analytics
K-12 Teacher Mentor: Emily Roberts, Marriotts Ridge High School, Marriottsville, Md.
Smith Faculty Mentor: Roy Thomason, management and organization lecturer - Grayson Vintz, Finance and Accounting
K-12 Teacher Mentor: Debra Shannon, River Hill High School, Clarksville, Md.
Faculty Mentor: Sarah Kroncke, finance senior lecturer
“The late Philip Merrill left a lasting legacy by emphasizing the profound value of mentorship,” said UMD President Darryll J. Pines. “It is truly rewarding to celebrate student achievements alongside the individuals who helped make their success possible.”
